How to punch needle — a beginner's guide
Never tried punch needling before? No worries at all — that's exactly what Holy Craft kits are made for. Everything you need is already in the box. This guide walks you through each step from start to finish, so you can sit down, relax, and start creating straight away.
1 Choose your kit and size
Start by picking a design that speaks to you. We have single kits in four sizes — 30×40cm, 40×50cm, 50×60cm, and 60×80cm — and Mini sets of 4 small canvases in two sizes. A good tip for beginners: go for a larger size. More space means more room to work with, and your finished piece will look even more detailed and stunning on the wall. If you love working on something cosy and quick, a mini set is a great starting point too.
2 Unpack and get to know your kit
Your Holy Craft kit comes with everything you need — nothing to buy separately:
- A pre-printed canvas, already stretched over a wooden frame and ready to go
- All the yarn you need, sorted into the right colours
- A punch needle tool
- A colour guide showing exactly which yarn goes where
- Step-by-step printed instructions
- Wall hangers so you can display your piece straight away
Take a moment to lay everything out and match your yarn colours to the colour guide before you begin.
3 Set up your workspace
Find a comfortable spot with good lighting — you'll want to see the printed numbers and lines on your canvas clearly. A few things that help:
- Sit at a table or with the frame resting on a firm surface
- Keep your yarn tangle-free by placing each colour nearby in a small bowl or cup
- Make sure the canvas is taut — it comes pre-stretched, so it's ready to go
4 Start punching
Thread your punch needle with the first yarn colour according to your colour guide. Hold the needle like a pen and push the tip straight down through the canvas, then pull it back up — leaving a small loop on the other side. That loop is your stitch. Repeat this across the section, keeping your stitches close together and following the printed design. Work section by section, colour by colour. There's no rush — this is where the relaxation kicks in.
- Always keep the open side of the needle tip facing the direction you're moving
- Don't pull the needle up too high or your loops will come undone
- Start with larger sections first to get comfortable with the motion
5 Finish and display your masterpiece
Once you've filled in your entire design, flip the frame over and secure any loose ends with a small dab of fabric glue to make sure nothing unravels. Let it dry, then flip it back — and admire what you've made. Your kit includes wall hangers, so you can hang it straight on the wall in its wooden frame. If you'd like a more polished gallery-style look, an optional display frame is available as an add-on in our shop.
Bonus tips for beginners
- Don't worry about perfect lines. Punch needling is a forgiving craft. Small imperfections disappear once the canvas is full — the overall effect always looks beautiful.
- If a loop comes out, just re-punch it. Simply push the needle back through the same spot. It happens to everyone at the start and is easy to fix.
- Take your time and enjoy the process. Punch needling is meant to be slow and meditative. Put on your favourite music or podcast, and let yourself unwind.
With these five simple steps, anyone can create something genuinely beautiful — no experience needed. It's not just a craft, it's a moment of calm in a busy day.
